~ Yesterday, I was saddened to learn of the passing of poet Daginne Aignend in December 2018. I had no idea that she had passed until I came across the message on another poetry site. She was a kind, caring, creative woman who I had the pleasure to know when she submitted her poetry here. I published some of her poems and will always remember our friendly interactions through email. I'm grateful to have known her. She left this world much too soon.

In the Quiet of Darkness by Daginne Aignend
Some nights she leaves,
levitates outside her body
A strange power gives her
the strength to float
in streams of cool blackness
Encounters with nocturnal
animals, she talks with owls,
moths and toads, learn
from their wisdom,
quenches their knowledge
She forces herself to get
back into her physical shell
before the break of dawn
The craving for the night
becomes a grim obsession
She wishes she could stay
forever in the quiet of darkness
One night, she's drawn into
a magical conversation
with a wise Eagle-Owl
and forgets to watch
the uprising daylight
Suddenly afraid
of what might happen
she tries to rush back.
She visions herself in her bed,
no longer able to breathe
or open her eyes again
Forever
in the quiet of darkness

Penance by Daginne Aignend
She wakes up in a dewy meadow
covered with pearl sprinkled poppies and daisies.
Her head feels like the time
she had too much blackberry wine
at the Harvest Fest last summer.
Dazed, she looks around, surprised,
wondering how she got here.
Her memories slowly start to seep
back into her numbed mind,
as she recalls...
She fled out of the house when
her father had one of his
temper tantrums and harassed mom.
She had begged him to leave mom alone
which made him even more furious.
In a blind rage, he went after her instead and
chased her through the fields.
A shadow of a smile sweeps over
her face when she looks at the
little quiet lake, the rippling wavelets
and remembers…
She made him pay for all the
pain and sorrow he inflicted
over the years.
Finally, the balance is restored.

Bella by Daginne Aignend
The attic smells moist and moldy
A result of forgotten memories
heaped in messy, dusty piles
Her grandmother's cloak furbished from an old blanket
in a vague taupe color and auburn stripes, still wears
the scent of her grandmother's perfume
Falling dusk muddles her view, as she turns on the switch
The archaic attic light flickers and dies hastily
Unseen faces in the dark, a glimmer of
drooling muzzles stare at her with eyes of evil
She crawls backward trying to find her way into
the safest area of the cottage
She grabs something moist and viscous
The sudden scent of squalid rust fills the atmosphere
The little flashlight shows Bella, her once beloved doll, in the dim light
Her bloodcurdling scream rendered silent as she sees it
Scarlet tears are dripping out of Bella's eyes!
A horrified panic paralyzes her, a vertigo attack.
Feeble knees, she has to sit down as she gasps for air
She cuts her finger on something sharp.
Shards of an old jar, near her bleeding Bella
The broken jar still contains the residue of some soggy, sanguine
substance, as she reads the handwritten label:
'Granny's homemade pomegranate syrup'

Tale of the Forgotten by Daginne Aignend
The outlying dilapidated cottage
Overgrown by ivy and moss
A wilderness of broken stones
An undefined sense of solace
Scented by mouldy garlic and cinnamon
Cobwebs covering the worn out stove
She wanders through memory fragmentsOvergrown by ivy and moss
A wilderness of broken stones
An undefined sense of solace
Scented by mouldy garlic and cinnamon
Cobwebs covering the worn out stove
Irresistibly drawn into the dark, grim cellar
A hazy shade of a woman, kneeling down
When eyes meet eyes, she understands
Her own face is looking back at her
Well-known incantations, a raven black gown
She smiles as she walks back to her car
Enriched by the forgotten ancient knowledge
Tangled propensities she finally comprehends
Travelling back through the miry marshes afar
Gave her an immense appetite for mice bellies
And a 'house for sale' shield in her hands
