Listening for the aria in the still air
Descending down the valley slip
With the first breach of winter snow
Repeating the coda of loose fences
Dead branches and leaves
Singing the end of the last summer day
The smell of benign frozen music
Infusing itself throughout the trees
The formal dress of winter falls in the light wind
As the wind delicately sews the garment
To a perfect fit in virgin white

Before the Rehearsal by Bradley Thomas
At the grand hall at dusk, a man
sits with his oboe alone,
with no music in front of him
breathing notes into the
auditorium, the air is his paper
as inspiration writes the music
of sadness; lost arguments, failed
dreams, and departed loved ones echoes as
shaded notes rise up, in hopes
they may find a place of consolation and
understanding if only for a moment
while the notes sings of his soul
in this hall of confessions, he asks forgiveness,
playing notes of repentance, seeking redemption
in melody before the sound dissipates into silence
sits with his oboe alone,
with no music in front of him
breathing notes into the
auditorium, the air is his paper
as inspiration writes the music
of sadness; lost arguments, failed
dreams, and departed loved ones echoes as
shaded notes rise up, in hopes
they may find a place of consolation and
understanding if only for a moment
while the notes sings of his soul
in this hall of confessions, he asks forgiveness,
playing notes of repentance, seeking redemption
in melody before the sound dissipates into silence
