Southern Gothic: A Romance for Ambrose Bierce: Sunday 2 / Long Haul Driving by Alan Catlin

Southern Gothic: A Romance for Ambrose Bierce:

Sunday 2

Outside the derelict house:
unpainted dry rotted wood,
sagging timbers, nearly toppled
chimney, foundation atilt
and in each unframed window
the bare faces of children
hidden behind thick, unnatural
hands covered by a costumer's
gloves: monster hands, the kind
that won't let go.

Southern Gothic: A Romance for Ambrose Bierce:

Long Haul Driving

Busted down no-year-
anymore truck; deflated
tires, burst radiator and
rusted-through-to-the-
ground front bumper,
driver's side door hanging
loose on sprung hinges,
caved, down and in, roof,
smashed completely out
windshield and windows;
near dusk on this rutted
road to nowhere and the boy
with dark hooded sweatshirt
tied close and tight to his head,
steering a locked-forever wheel,
his face covered with that
of an old man, thick aviator
goggles protecting his eyes.

Alan Catlin has published dozens of chapbooks and full length books. Among those are Portrait of the Artist Afraid of His Self-Portrait and Asylum Garden: after Van Gogh.
