along a fog-eaten highway
with a misty forest backdrop
mysterious with violet plumage
and aloof from human concerns.
Watching from the train, I feel
speed competing with speed,
the load of coal so urgent
that the truck distorts itself
on its childish, oversized wheels.
Power lines parallel the road
and railroad alike. They knit
this machine-powered scenery
into a post-expressionist mode
shading into a distance
that we’ll never quite achieve.
